Quick Take
A purpose-built trail buggy versus a scale trail truck at a price difference. The Capra dominates technical terrain with portal axles and a narrow frame, while the Enduro Sendero HD offers a realistic scale rig with a longer wheelbase at a friendlier price. Different rigs for different goals.
The Axial Capra 1.9 UTB at its mid-range price and the Element RC Enduro Sendero HD at its price point represent two distinct philosophies in the 1/10 crawler world. The Capra is a stripped-down crawling weapon. The Sendero HD is a scale trail truck that looks like a real overlanding rig. That price gap buys you portal axles on the Capra, which is the single biggest functional difference between these two machines and the single most impactful upgrade in the crawler world.
On the trail, the Capra's advantages are measurable and consistent. It sits at 6.6 lbs versus the Sendero's 8 lbs. That 1.4-lb difference is enormous when you're trying to maintain traction on a steep sidehill or keep momentum on a technical climb. The Capra clears obstacles better with 3.5 inches of ground clearance compared to the Sendero's 3 inches, and on top of that, the portal axles push the axle housings even higher above the rocks. This means the Capra's differentials and axle tubes ride above obstacles that would grind against the Sendero's conventional axle housings. Over hundreds of trail runs, this difference in protection adds up to far fewer broken parts on the Capra. The Capra's 9-inch width versus the Sendero's 10.24 inches means it slips through tight gaps and narrow shelf roads more easily. Both top out at 8 mph, and both run brushed motors on 3000mAh 2S packs, so trail speed and runtime are nearly identical at around 30 to 45 minutes per charge.
The Sendero HD fights back on build quality in certain areas. Element RC's Stealth X gearbox is well-regarded for smooth, quiet operation that makes slow-speed crawling more enjoyable. The Sendero's 12.8-inch wheelbase provides more stability on steep descents compared to the Capra's 12.3 inches. That extra half inch keeps the center of gravity more safely between the axles. The realistic truck body with a proper bed and cab looks fantastic on the trail, which matters tremendously if scale appearance is part of your enjoyment. Element RC has also built a reputation for including quality hardware and electronics at the lower price point, making the Sendero feel more premium than its price tag suggests.
Durability is a wash with some caveats that favor each truck in different scenarios. Both rigs use quality plastics and metal where it counts. The Capra's cage-style body shrugs off rollovers that would crack or scratch the Sendero's lexan body panels. For aggressive crawling where tip-overs are frequent, the Capra's open design is practically damage-proof cosmetically. The Sendero's heavier 8-lb weight puts more stress on drivetrain components during aggressive crawling, particularly on the motor and gearbox when climbing under full load. For moderate trail use at a relaxed pace, both hold up perfectly fine. Neither rig is waterproof, so both need attention before water crossings. Plan on sealing electronics if your trails have streams.
The value equation favors the Sendero HD if you want a complete-looking trail truck at its price point that you can enjoy driving and photographing on the trail. It's a great platform to learn crawling on and upgrade over time with aftermarket parts. But if you're serious about crawling performance from day one, the Capra's a mid-range price tag is actually a bargain: portal axles, lighter weight, and better climbing geometry make it clearly superior on technical terrain. The modest savings on the Sendero evaporates fast if you start buying upgrade parts trying to match the Capra's capability.
If you plan to crawl difficult lines, the Capra's portal axles and lighter weight are worth the price premium. The Sendero can't keep up on hard terrain.
Full reviewThe Sendero HD looks like a real truck and costs significantly less. For moderate trails and photo runs, it's a great rig. Just don't expect it to match the Capra on hard rock.
