Quick Take
The 1/18 mini crawler showdown. The Redcat Ascent-18 comes in at its budget-friendly price making it the budget play. The Traxxas TRX-4M Defender is affordably priced but brings Traxxas build quality and waterproofing. The question: is the TRX-4M worth nearly double?
Mini crawlers have exploded in popularity, and these two 1/18-scale trucks represent opposite ends of the market. The Redcat Ascent-18 is the budget entry at its budget-friendly price. The Traxxas TRX-4M Defender is the premium option at its price point. Both are brushed 4WD crawlers that top out at 5 mph and weigh under 2 lbs. The spec sheets look almost identical. The experience is not.
Both trucks share similar dimensions. The Ascent-18 is 10.63 inches long on a 6.3-inch wheelbase. The TRX-4M is 10.91 inches on a 6.22-inch wheelbase. Ground clearance is identical at 1.57 inches. Weight is close with the Ascent at 1.54 lbs and the TRX-4M at 1.76 lbs. On paper, these trucks are twins. In your hands, the difference is obvious.
The TRX-4M's build quality is a class above. Steering response is crisp and proportional. Throttle control at crawling speeds is smooth and predictable. The truck feels dialed from the factory. The Ascent-18 works and crawls competently, but the steering has more slop, throttle response is less refined, and the overall fit of components isn't as tight. This isn't surprising given the noticeable price gap, but it's worth understanding. The TRX-4M feels like a scaled-down version of a premium crawler. The Ascent-18 feels like what it is: a budget truck.
The TRX-4M is waterproof. The Ascent-18 is not. For a crawler, this matters. Kitchen sink crawling, garden puddles, wet rocks in the backyard. The TRX-4M shrugs them off while the Ascent-18 needs electronics protection. This alone could justify the price difference for many buyers.
Battery specs are essentially identical: 800mAh 2S for the Ascent, 750mAh 2S for the TRX-4M. Runtime is 30-45 minutes for both, which is generous for a micro truck. Battery costs are negligible at this scale. The bigger concern is charging convenience, and both trucks use small packs that charge quickly on any basic charger.
Performance on the trail is where the TRX-4M justifies its premium. Its suspension geometry provides better articulation, keeping all four tires on the ground through uneven terrain. The Ascent-18's suspension works but doesn't flex as far before lifting a wheel. Tire compound matters enormously at this scale, and the TRX-4M's stock tires grip better than the Ascent's. Both trucks benefit from aftermarket tire upgrades, but the TRX-4M's stock setup is more capable.
Value is the Ascent-18's trump card. At its budget price, it costs 60% of the TRX-4M's price and gets you 80% of the crawling experience. For a first-time buyer testing whether mini crawling is their thing, the Ascent-18 is a low-risk entry point. If you already know you love crawling and want the best 1/18 experience available, the TRX-4M is worth every penny of its premium. The TRX-4M's aftermarket is also significantly larger, with hundreds of 3D-printed upgrades, body options, and accessories available from a passionate community. The Ascent-18's aftermarket is growing but can't match it yet.
Affordable entry to mini crawling. No waterproofing, but the Ascent-18 is a real crawler at a price that doesn't sting if the hobby doesn't stick.
Full reviewThe TRX-4M is the premium pick. Waterproof, better build, bigger aftermarket. Worth the jump if you're serious about mini crawling.
